Description

For beginners and experienced meditators alike, Waking Up is for anyone who understands that meditation should transform one's view of the world. WHY IS WAKING UP DIFFERENT FROM OTHER MEDITATION APPS? *Meditation is often taught as though it were an ancient version of an executive stress ball. But it’s more like the Large Hadron Collider. Waking Up users quickly understand that there are fundamental discoveries to be made in the laboratory of their own minds. *Waking Up guides you through a 50-day introductory course before unlocking access to an ongoing series of daily meditations. If you’re a novice, you need this. (And if you’re an experienced meditator, you probably do, too.) All meditations are created and led by Sam Harris. *Waking Up also contains a growing curriculum of short talks by Sam Harris on a wide variety of topics relevant for deepening your practice. *Waking Up never resorts to gimmicks or pseudoscience. The app contains only what you need to make fundamental insights into the nature of your mind. “I’ve been incredibly impressed with this app. Whether you want to sharpen your mind or experience more peace, this can help in dramatic fashion. The power of its progression is hard to overstate.” — Tim Ferriss Tim Ferriss is an early-stage investor in technology companies and the author of five #1 New York Times best-sellers, including The 4-Hour Workweek and Tools of Titans. He hosts the popular podcast, The Tim Ferriss Show. ABOUT SAM HARRIS Sam Harris is the author of five New York Times best sellers, including Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion. His writing and public lectures cover a wide range of topics—neuroscience, meditation, moral philosophy, religion, rationality—but generally focus on how a growing understanding of ourselves and the world is changing our sense of how we should live. Sam received a degree in philosophy from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA. He has practiced meditation for over 30 years and has studied with many Tibetan, Indian, Burmese, and Western meditation teachers, both in the United States and abroad. I’ve given other apps 5 stars for much less value than I’ve received from Waking Up. Wish there was more stars. This app has actually helped me improve my life.

I've been trying to build a meditation practice, on and off, for several years now. Unfortunately, I've never managed to stay consistent with it, and lately it has mostly been off. I'm fully sold on the benefits of regular meditation, but practicing on a daily basis is easier said than done, and I feel like I still haven't really progressed beyond the stage of mostly "thinking with my eyes closed." I've also been a fan of Sam's work for a long time, so I was eagerly awaiting the release of this app in the hope that it would get me "hooked" and teach me the techniques I need to progress. Unfortunately, after spending a few weeks with it, I'm a bit disappointed so far. I have to agree with Voletric's review; I find Sam's method of trying to disprove the existence of "the self" rather confusing. Many of Sam's instructions in this vein feel to me more like Zen koans than straightforward guidance, and they tend to leave me stuck in my thoughts, struggling to interpret them and understand what I'm supposed to take away from them. Perhaps I'm just too literal-minded, but this methodology does not seem to be working for me. I've had much more success with other apps like Calm, even if their approaches are perhaps more surface-level.

I’ve been looking for a meditation app for years. I first heard Sam Harris on Joe Rogan’s podcast and he spoke to me. This is the first app I’ve ever paid to subscribed to. I trust Sam Harris and I honestly believe he has positive intentions. This app is amazing and has had a profound impact on my daily life. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of mindfulness with us. I definitely recommend the app and the monthly subscription.

This application has been very helpful to me. It has taught me many techniques that have allowed me to unhook from the incessant chatter of self talk. I would gladly recommend it to everyone. Good luck!

I like this app better than the one I had been using because it explains and validates the pitfalls one encounters when doing this type of meditation and how to work with it. I like the variety of lessons and the lengths. I’m just starting this so I will return after a few more lessons. Suggestion: it would be helpful if once or twice throughout day, app users could schedule a reminder for a one minute meditation on the lesson for the day.

Sam and his instruction gave me mind strength that could never have been achieved alone. Very intuitive and to the point. Amazing user experience.
  • Worth it.

This is my first and only rating/review of an app and the first app I have paid for. I struggled for months to get my meditation practice started, always feeling I must be doing it wrong. I couldn’t get past 2 consecutive days of 5 minutes. I have now completed the first 50 days, and I can’t foresee a time I will tire of it and quit. As frustrating as meditation can be, Sam makes it seem like an exercise that is building benefits, much like going to the gym. I paid for a yearly membership after the first 5 days and am glad I did. I haven’t spent as much time with the lessons as I plan to, but the ones I have have been excellent.
