  • Poor update decisions

Olive Tree is one of the best iOS Bible study apps, HOWEVER, their development process frequently results in 2-steps forward, 3-steps backward. This is VERY FRUSTRATING. User interface (UI) “improvements” make me question whether the design/development team ever considers testing their ideas with a focus group of actual customers. For example, recently they updated their “Reading Plan” UI to deliver (in their words) “a beautiful new design” that will “encourage you to get into God’s Word each day.” Strangely they made the same mistake this time that they made a couple of years ago when user complaints caused them to return a reading plan feature that they dropped, namely the projected end-date. To the developer’s credit, they didn’t drop the feature entirely this time. They just hid it. If you have committed yourself to reading through the Bible in a year, the most important progress indicator is the scheduled completion date. You usually know when you started a plan, and the scheduled completion date signals if you are ahead of schedule or behind schedule. Instead, Olive Tree is now offering a colorful circular icon declaring progress as a 2-digit percentage. This is not helpful at all! How is it “encouraging” to see the huge measurement icon stuck at 70% when I read days 254, 255, 256, and 257 of a 365-day plan. How can I quickly determine if I forgot to read one day when the progress indicator stays on the same percentage for every four days even if I am reading daily? It gets worse… You would think that clicking on “View Schedule” might alert me if I am behind in my reading plan. But the schedule shows me a day number. For example, it boldly tells me that day 255 is next, and in fine print it shows me that I have completed 254 of 365. If I started my plan on July 1, am I supposed to mentally compute that day 254 would be March 10, and since today is March 12, I’m behind in my reading? But all is not lost, if I am patient with my tapping, I can find the small info icon which opens up another new screen that shows me Date Started, Projected End Date, and Last Read date. This screen, that is 3 taps deep, is the one that is most useful to anyone committed to a reading plan. Isn’t it? How Olive Tree decided that their design was more encouraging baffles me. Am I different from all other customers? Have the UI designers ever struggled with going through a Reading Plan themselves? Did other customers tell them their planned Reading Plan UI change was great before they delivered it to everyone? Did anyone on the design team or management ask a focus group before writing code? Do OliveTree employees use their app? IT REALLY IS A GREAT app, and Olive Tree clearly has talented graphic designers, but they get ZERO-STARs for the Reading Plan improvements, and ONE-STAR for not figuring this out for themselves.

KNOCK IT OFF, Apple!! I’m a 20+ year user of this app on various platforms, have written DOZENS of five-star reviews, some very detailed, AND THEY’RE ALL GONE!!! APPLE: THIS IS NOT FAIR TO USERS OR TO DEVELOPERS!!!!
  • App has always been excellent. I’m exploring the latest release.

It doesn’t seem you can load your own reading plan or other a list of related verses you’ve compiled from other sources.

  • Great app

This app is great. I’m still learning the functions but absolutely the verse level notes and highlights across different bible versions are my favorite features to date. Bible versions have to be purchased and are not cheap however the reach of the app across platforms with notes and categories make the purchases well worth it. For me this app is second to none.
