As featured in This Old House Magazine: "A must for us." The Woodshop Widget is a rich collection of wood-related utilities, ranging from board volume calculation to shellac mixing aids, squareness testing and many other goodies. It is useful in woodworking as well as in DIY and construction/contracting projects. It contains a wide range of functionality that handles many tedious tasks simply and clearly. The Widget understands Imperial and Metric, and the local measurement system for your iOS device is used by default. You can change this at any time with the app settings. It also uses a custom keyboard for quick access, making editing both efficient and immediate. Be sure to check out the online companion site, which includes all of the same features, at! Movement Shows an estimate of how much a board might grow and shrink under different conditions, based on verified information for over 270 distinct species. You can enter measured or humidity-based water content, board width, and how the board was cut from the tree (anywhere from flat to quartersawn). The amount of change is shown as you edit. Board Volume Easily enter the 3 dimensions required for calculating board volume and get an immediate amount. You can also enter a price and quantity of boards for a total price. The local currency is automatically used when entering prices. Compare A species comparison tool that lets you walk through information on up to 288 species of wood, comparing hardness, density and movement. It even shows you which species is "better." Compound & Crown Create compound miter cuts with any combination of angles! Cuts for crown molding, cupolas and sloped boxes have never been easier to make. Decimal to Fraction Enter fractions and see the decimal results, or enter decimal values and see fractions calculated, all in one place. Remainders and reduced fractions are automatically shown. Species A species data viewer which also includes "other names" for up to 288 species. Shellac Mix or dilute shellac in any amounts. Enter a "pound cut" and the measurements are balanced for you. Mix as much or as little as you need, using not only gallons and pounds, but also cups and ounces or liters and milliliters. Dilute from any pound cut that you have on hand to any other concentration, instantly! Squareness Test your framing squares, combination squares, carcasses or anything else that needs a perfect right angle for accuracy by measuring lengths. The Widget will show you how far from "right" the angle is. If you have any problems, please email:

  • Good app, however...

This is a nice app and usability is pretty intuitive. One thing that is super frustrating is the board volume calculator. It works well at first use and allows you to determine expected costs at the lumberyard by calculating board feet, based on advertised price per board foot. The frustrating part is making adjustments when, say, you're calculating costs of different species. You would think that you would put in your dimensions and then just change the price per board foot for the different species, but if leave the app, get a phone call, turn you phone off or your phone goes to sleep mode, all of the dimensions reset and you're left with having to put all that info in again. Sounds minor, but super frustrating when you're trying to do calculations even within a 10-15 time frame. I hope that can be fixed in future versions. Otherwise, still a decent app!

What a piece of junk. This stupid program doesn't give me a keyboard to use to enter any values or measurements. Pure junk.
  • Good but needs some pics

This is a handy little app with some great features. Really wish they would add some lumber pictures though....maybe some raw pics and some pics of a species under finish...otherwise, it's a nice app.

    Terrible, a waste of money.
  • Useful

I have found this app useful in the shop. However in the wood species comparison it has the stability comparison reversed in the verbiage, interpreting less shrinkage as less stable rather than more stable.
  • Great app!

Well worth the money. I especially like the wood expansion calculator--would be worth $1.99 for that alone.
  • Fantastic asset to any woodworker

Can't say enough good things about this app. Easy, clean interface, great tips that are updated regularly and the board foot calculator and shellac mixing calculator are invaluable. I work in a woodworking store and it's nice to have a quick answer when a customer who doesn't understand board foot pricing asks me, "How much does this board cost?" Never fails to impress when I whip out my iPod Touch, punch in the numbers and show them the cost of the board. This app is aces 10!
  • A Shop Godsend!

This app combines features that I was using multiple other apps for. The humidity/expansion calculator is ESSENTIAL if you ship your work between arid and humid climates and it works great on the iPad too! Marc Spagnuolo is a busy partisan in the woodworking community through his podcast and somehow he finds time responding to emails with great answers. His Wood Whisperer podcast has taught me everything I know about woodworking and now I'm making money at it! THANKS MARC!!!!
