Shockingly basic; yet enjoyable
The app is far too basic for an organization such as the Globe. I know money is tight in print media, but surely someone in upper management is wise enough to know they need to be investing in technology.
However, there is something to be said for its format. I like that I can have a “newspaper” experience without all the pages and the fees of home delivery. Even as a millennial, I like that its “all the news fit to print,” per se, as opposed to every story we’ve ever written on the website, which i have to scroll through. I like that newspapers have a front and back page - I knew when I was done and I trusted the professionals to discern what stories were important enough to get printed.
That being said, they could continue this format but give it some significant upgrades. Certainly if some come to mind for me, there are experts who would know even better.
One final note: I haven’t used the app on my phone; I imagine it might not work as well. It seems more suited for a tablet.
What will it take for you guys to fix this app? The only constant in my morning experience with The Globe is the app freezing at least 3-4 times while I am reading. Close the app, reload, get two stories in, and freeze again! Total amateur hour here. Just pathetic. The worst part - The Globe is a great newspaper and this app does not do it justice. Fix it!
Why not have ePaper and app version? Or joint

The ePaper is good for what it is. However, there should be the ability to change to a traditional app version such as the Washington Post or NYTimes app.

I cannot even read the Globe now. It freezes every time. It worked great after a faulty start for a while and is now worse than it has ever been. Please fix it!! I am a dedicated Boston Globe reader but now am just New York Times all the way until it is better.
Horrible app that we must accept
As everyone else has pointed out, this app has many problems and is embarrassingly awkward to use to read the newspaper, which is its only purpose! And I’ve been using it for a couple years, over a few upgrades and iOS versions. My biggest complaint is that after you have downloaded today’s paper (which means it is cached on the phone), if you start to read it but then stop for a couple hours, when you go back to continue reading, the app shows you the page you were on for 1 second, then goes back to the main screen. Why? It’s not like there is a new version of the paper that I might want to read—this is in the middle of the day, and the app should easily be able to know if there even is a new newspaper edition or not. It is utterly annoying and wastes my time. Fit it!!
Could be much better
This is at least the third version of the Boston Globe app an each version gets progressively worse. A couple of versions ago, the app worked great - it was easy to use and had handy features like auto-delivery. This new version has improved from the disaster it was when it premiered but it still has issues. My biggest gripe at the moment is that since IOS 11, which was released months ago, the app doesn’t deliver the current edition unless you close the app and reopen it. They have had plenty of time to fix this but they don't. They are incredibly slow at fixing issues - it’s almost as if they don’t care about losing readers. For a dying industry you would think they would put more effort into providing a compelling product - currently it hasn’t been updated for over a year despite the bugs.
Not Befitting a Great Newspaper
Recently subscribed to the digital edition of the Globe and use an iPad or iPhone as primary interface. The App is poor, unbefitting of an otherwise great newspaper. Downloading requires hitting "download" several times; and after you get through that, it takes a couple of minutes to download, even with a strong internet connection (NY Times, in contrast, takes a few seconds). After downloading, one sees a miniature version of the print edition and has to click on tiny articles to expand/read them. This interface is archaic, and in stark contrast to the way almost all other news apps present information (again, the NY Times makes it easy to navigate and read articles). Even when I bite the bullet and swipe through articles (vs. pages of the paper), the same article frequently appears several times (must be a glitch in a buggy App). I've complained about all this several times to the Globe, but there didn't appear to be much concern. The low user ratings here however should be sending a clear message they can't (or shouldn't) ignore.
Apr 2017: Cancelled subscription and re-subscribed after 9 months after the subscription department told me their iPhone app had been updated. I took that to mean overhauled and fixed, which it decidedly is not.
Jun 2017: They claim to have upgraded the app ... but that's not apparent to me. I'm cancelling my subscription again until they have a complete reconstruction of the app.
Jan 2018: Resubscribed and tried again. Even though I admittedly have not tried every app in Apple’s menu of apps, I think this could be a strong contender for worst app ever. The overall user reviews and ratings are accurate; and it stuns me that the Globe does nothing to address this problem.

This app is crap
Please, Mr. Henry, just give up and buy rights to use the WaPo or NYT app. They're very different from each other, but both are perfectly acceptable. By contrast, this app is crap. I don't mind most of the things that seem to bother other reviewers, but the number of times it freezes, or won't download the newest edition, or doesn't respond to attempts to proceed to the next page and then decides to respond to all of the attempts at once by skipping ahead many pages, or responds to an attempt to enlarge the current page by sort of going back a page and then returning to the current page, or..., is infuriating. The features are acceptable but the bugs are intolerable.
Update: I'm not sure what it means, but since writing the above, I found that simply powering my iPad off and back on makes the app behave much better, so I'm raising my rating accordingly.
I despise this sucky app

We canceled our print edition due to chronic delivery issues. My iPad 2 cannot handle this app well, so I use a new iPhone 7. Accessing the plain text version is necessary for an article of any length. Today, the plain text version of the lead front page story cannot be accessed by tapping, while other stories on the same page can be. Paging through the plain text stories one by one shows a blank document for the lead story. This is a regular occurrence, but particularly egregious for a Spotlight piece. I’d give this zero stars if I could. This crap app is making me rethink my digital description.
Also, navigation is clunky. “Pages” should be an option above the main view, not buried in a menu.
