  • I won’t be around long I think

I loved loved loved this app! I have trouble sleeping and this was a huge resource for me and helped me with this issue. Since launching their new program I am so very very disappointed!! Most of the authors I was listening to and loving are now locked and I now have to pay at least 8-10 dollars to unlock them. I had no problem paying a flat fee and listening to all I want... I would have paid 2 or 3 times what I was and still have been content. But I go through books quickly and I sure don’t want to pay a flat fee AND pay per book too (for anything good at all) and then find I don’t like it... moving on to another book would just be expensive. I can’t begin to tell you how unhappy this makes me! I’m now going to have to go back to renting books from my local library and listen to them on a portable CD player which is a pain in the butt. I’m sure I won’t be around long now. Sad, because I would have kept paying and kept using this app for years to come... your going to regret this hibooks when your loyal customers up and leave. I wish I could give you zero stars as that’s how disappointed I am!
  • Let’s tell the truth here!

So this is what happened. Hibooks started out as Otto and was an amazing deal. Actually, too much of a good deal. At the price point of $10, there was no way they were paying any of the authors or publishing companies any kind of compensation. It was unsustainable and they got sued. Like a car running down the hill with no breaks, out of control. In the meantime, their livelihoods become connected, they have car payments to make, house payments. So instead of admitting what happened, they are backed into a corner and start to lie. They talk about restructuring, they talk about coins… but they never just tell the truth, which is, you can’t just offer books without paying the publishing companies. They should’ve known this. A bunch of amateurs who were destined for a crash from the moment they started. I would’ve had so much more respect for them had they simply told the truth. I suppose I should also mention, that Hi Books is a Chinese company, a country that has a little respect for copyright.
  • Not like Netflix after all😪😪

Sorely disappointed, I really was looking forward to the new selection until I realized I would have to pay for the books I want on top of the monthly 10$. I don’t want to pay per book. I can read them too quickly. All of my favorite authors only have paid books. I don’t see me staying a subscriber at this rate. I really liked the idea, and the app and kept my subscription even when I cancelled some others. Really sad to see this change even though I’m sure it is just business.
  • Scam

I listen to a lot of audiobooks. When audible got to expensive and then scribd became insanely stupid with disappearing books this was my last chance for books to download and listen to. Since the new upgrade it’s now audible lite. Can’t listen to anything unless you buy the book. What is the sense of that. I don’t want the “free” or “suggested” ones that come with the monthly subscription. I want to listen to what I want. Don’t bother with this.
  • Not worth it...

This was a good service at one point. It didn't have quite the polish and cross device capabilities that audible offered but it was adequate and more cost-effective. The applications shortcomings (I.E.no sync between devices, no user reviews, poor search…) Could be overlooked considering the price however things have changed. You used to pay a flat fee and have access to a pretty substantial library of audiobooks. Now, they have restructured their pricing scheme and you paid the same flat fee but many of the books that used to be included in that flat fee are now locked behind an additional pay wall. Books that used to be free, like all of the Stephen King books, now range from $8 to $13 each. This is on top of the $10 per month fee. As a comparison, I can subscribe to Audible for $14 a month and get one free book included with that. In addition, I get really good discounts on other books in their collection, which is far larger than the hibooks collection. In the end, it just isn't worth going with an alternative to Audible when it ends up costing the same or more and I don't have the backing of Amazon and the huge library of Audible.
  • Cancelled this and recommend you do the same

I loved the 10.00 price point where I can listen whatever book I choose. However slowly they started to change where certain books would be removed from the app with a countdown letting you know when it will be available again. That was an issue I could deal with. However now it’s 6 bucks which sound amazing. But the issue is every book I want to listen to I have to put additional money into app to buy coins and use those coins to buy the books. After spending two days trying to find something I wanted to listen to with out buying coins. I felt this app is now a scam and just not worth it. I went back to audible immediately after canceling this.
  • Ridiculous!

The app has been changed. Now the books that were unlimited cost “coins” aka MORE MONEY. The available books without costing more are poorly published with readers that have no inflection or pronounce the words incorrectly.
  • All titles

I can’t believe I’m giving hibooks a one star rating after praising them just a few weeks ago. It comes down to this. They’ve changed. They lowered their rates just to build into their club a way of making more money. Yes, they’ve got a nice library, but not only do I have to pay the $5.99 club fee but I also have to pay for the books as well! What’s up with that??? I’d rather be paying $15.00 a month to just listen to books. I don’t want to own the audiobook, I only want to rent it. I’ve been with hibooks for about 8 months and then they changed their way and became greedy. Oh well for them. Bye bye hibooks. I’m bummed.
  • Goodbye Hi Books

    By AMLoki16
The choices you get for the $10 are not worth it. Why am I paying you a monthly fee, then $12-$15 MORE for newer books? Definitely going back to audible instead of this ripoff— at least audible is upfront about prices and doesn’t hide behind “coins.”
  • No longer great at all.

    By tpkrause
Great, because a subscription service for audiobooks is exactly what audiobook readers need. The app could really use some upgrades, though: syncing book position across devices, is my biggest request. Thanks! UPDATE: The new service is terrible. They now charge $10 plus like $12 for most books in their “new collection,” which, from what I have seen, are the same books they used to have but now they charge. Stephen King books, for example, were there as part of the regular collection, but now they cost $12 each to listen to. Going back to audible. (I’m not alone here. I’ve read the most recent reviews.) Greedy, greedy. I’ve cancelled.
